Angelic filly stays unbeaten and is now well on her way to a cracking first season tally

Co-trainer Ray Green struggles to remember the last good juvenile filly he trained and certainly not one that won their first three starts like Angelic Copy.

The little pro took her earnings to $42,250 tonight when she came from the rear of the four-horse Young Guns fillies heat to easily reel in stablemate Lincoln Linda and score by three-quarters of a length.

And, if the fields remain as small in the run-up to the $70,000 Young Guns Final on May 2, Green can see Angelic Copy winning the best part of $100,000 in her first six starts.

“I still can’t understand why the others are sitting on their hands,” said Green, referring to the four, five and six-horse fields she has contested so far.

“A couple of years ago we were racing before Christmas. When we had Killer Queen racing a few years ago there were a lot more two-year-olds around.”

While Killer Queen was placed in feature juvenile races like the 2015 Harness Jewels and Sales Series Final, she won only one of her 11 starts, and took six starts to do it.

“This filly is such a little pro - nothing deters her - she does everything right and does just enough to get the job done.”

Green says it’s not just a matter of Angelic Copy being rewarded for her good behaviour.

“Zac (Butcher) said she drove beautifully tonight, was just perfect, and her manners won the day but she has plenty of ability, she’s always been good.

“And she’s not just a running horse like the other one (Lincoln Linda) who was a lunatic again tonight. She beat herself up.”

Unable to get the filly to settle in the early trail, driver Maurice McKendry swept around to attack debutante Spirit Of Tupelo for the lead and had to spend plenty of tickets to get there. “Once in front she didn’t pull quite so hard but that duel obviously didn’t help.”

Ahead of Angelic Copy are another fillies race on April 11 - “if it gets off the ground” - a second Young Guns heat on April 25, then the final, with combined stakes of $110,000.

And, regardless of how much of that booty she scoops up, the Bettor’s Wish - Dudinka’s Angel filly will still put Green’s wife Debbie way ahead of the eight ball, her weanling sale ticket just $7500.

Ray’s comments

Friday night at Auckland

Race 2: Sammy Lincoln
6.18pm

“He was checked and locked wheels into the first turn last week and he had a decent puncture wound in his leg from where they ran into him so you certainly couldn’t condemn him for galloping. He’s a really nice horse, who is going to win races quickly. He hasn’t missed any work, and should be right in it.”

Race 3: Lincoln Wave
6.43pm

“He’s drawn wide again (six) but he’s good enough to get the job done. It’s a bit more of a test for him but there are no cup horses in there and he’s a pretty nice horse. We’ve waited for both him and Sammy Lincoln because of their setbacks at two but it’s been worth it.”

Race 4: Johnny Lincoln
7.11pm

“He was very tough in winning after sitting parked last week. He’s awkwardly drawn again but he tries hard and, with a bit of luck and a good trip, he can get some of it.”

Race 6: Tyson
8.08pm

“Completely forget his run last week when he had no luck in the running. He’s a definite chance.”

Race 6: Spiritual Bliss
8.08pm

“She took no harm from the incident last Friday and has trained on well. I think she’ll go well. If you analyse her run, they went down the back in 27.8 and she did well to finish on for fourth after sitting parked.”
