Johnny Lincoln, outer, spooks at water spray from the mobile car at Alexandra Park.

Johnny Lincoln drawn to set the record straight at Alex Park on Friday night

Rookie two-year-old Johnny Lincoln can prove his last start duck egg form all wrong when he tackles the opening event at Auckland on Friday night.

The zero in his formline - he beat only one home in the 13-horse field - unfairly reflects the merit of his run, the first time in his career that he has not paid a dividend.

Taking on older horses on a very wet night, his race went wrong right from the start when he spooked at the spray coming from the tyres of the mobile start car.

“He got a fright and nearly pulled up,” said Ray Green who trains the colt with Nathan Delany. “Fergy had to take hold and, once he got back, that was that. You can forget that race.”

Very wide round the first turn, Johnny Lincoln went back to last and, while he was still there turning for home, he recorded the best closing sectionals in the race, sprinting home from the 800 in 56.4 and the 400 in 26.8.

On Friday night, Johnny Lincoln ($3.50) draws perfectly in two and has only five rivals, the best of whom looks to be $3.10 favourite Debrief, albeit drawn the widest.

Green, however, warns not to drop Johnny’s stablemate Tyson ($5.50) fresh from his tough win at the Park last week.

“There’s not a lot between Johnny and Tyson. Tyson can do a bit of work. He’s one year older and a bit stronger, but I wouldn’t favour him over Johnny from a wider draw.”

Lincoln Farms’ each-way prospects don’t end there with good cases to be made in the fifth race for both Kevin Kline ($13, $3.60) and Leo Lincoln ($19, $4.60).

“Kevin has drawn wide on the front row but he gets back a bit anyway,” Green said.

Three back on the outer last week, and four wide when challenging round the home turn, Kevin Kline put down the fastest closing sectionals in the race, 55.7 and 27.2, when closing to a neck of winner You Little Beauty.

“He should go a good race, he just needs a reasonable trip.”

Leo Lincoln is hard held in behind the first four at the Park last week.Leo Lincoln is hard held in behind the first four at the Park last week.Green also believes Leo Lincoln can get into the money, despite his second row draw.

“He was unlucky last week, held up throughout the run home. He couldn’t get out and finished very well.”

Leo Lincoln was untested over the last 50 metres by Peter Ferguson, hard held on the back of You Little Beauty, carving out closing sectionals of 56 and 27.4.

Leo Lincoln will be suited by the longer 2200 metres this week but in a R45 to R60 event, he finds five higher rated horses against him.

“He just needs a nice trip to get into the money.”

Remaining runner The Rascal, punted in to $1.85 on the fixed ddds market in the fourth race, only has to pace a little more cleanly to win.

Despite being fitted with spreaders last week he was still rough at various points round the course when 2.5 lengths second to Caloriefree.

“He gets on himself when he’s asked to sprint quickly, he needs a steady pace. But in a six-horse field he won’t be too far off them even if he sits last. He’ll win one soon.”

Race 4: Dreams Of Eric
7.39pm

“He ran good time (2:41.7) last start and wasn’t given much peace in the lead. He’s an honest little fellow who is racing well and he moves in one, to five, with the early scratching. You can’t fault what he’s doing and he’s definitely a chance to get some of the money again.”

Race 1: Tyson
5.54pm

“He dogged up on the pole last time so we’ve taken it off this week. He’ll get his head round but at least he’ll steer better and go forward. He’s taken a little longer to come to it but he’s getting better each time and is racing well.”

Race 6: Johnny Lincoln
8.15pm

“Fergie said he’d have run straight past them with a clear run last week. There was a gap in the straight but it closed when he got to it. He’s not the best on the bends yet and can get keen but he’s a work in progress. He still has a bit to learn but he’s getting better. He should get a good trip from the pole and be right in it.”
