Johnny Lincoln drawn to set the record straight at Alex Park on Friday night
Rookie two-year-old Johnny Lincoln can prove his last start duck egg form all wrong when he tackles the opening event at Auckland on Friday night.
The zero in his formline - he beat only one home in the 13-horse field - unfairly reflects the merit of his run, the first time in his career that he has not paid a dividend.
Taking on older horses on a very wet night, his race went wrong right from the start when he spooked at the spray coming from the tyres of the mobile start car.
“He got a fright and nearly pulled up,” said Ray Green who trains the colt with Nathan Delany. “Fergy had to take hold and, once he got back, that was that. You can forget that race.”
Very wide round the first turn, Johnny Lincoln went back to last and, while he was still there turning for home, he recorded the best closing sectionals in the race, sprinting home from the 800 in 56.4 and the 400 in 26.8.
On Friday night, Johnny Lincoln ($3.50) draws perfectly in two and has only five rivals, the best of whom looks to be $3.10 favourite Debrief, albeit drawn the widest.
Green, however, warns not to drop Johnny’s stablemate Tyson ($5.50) fresh from his tough win at the Park last week.
“There’s not a lot between Johnny and Tyson. Tyson can do a bit of work. He’s one year older and a bit stronger, but I wouldn’t favour him over Johnny from a wider draw.”
Lincoln Farms’ each-way prospects don’t end there with good cases to be made in the fifth race for both Kevin Kline ($13, $3.60) and Leo Lincoln ($19, $4.60).
“Kevin has drawn wide on the front row but he gets back a bit anyway,” Green said.
Three back on the outer last week, and four wide when challenging round the home turn, Kevin Kline put down the fastest closing sectionals in the race, 55.7 and 27.2, when closing to a neck of winner You Little Beauty.
“He should go a good race, he just needs a reasonable trip.”
Leo Lincoln is hard held in behind the first four at the Park last week.Green also believes Leo Lincoln can get into the money, despite his second row draw.
“He was unlucky last week, held up throughout the run home. He couldn’t get out and finished very well.”
Leo Lincoln was untested over the last 50 metres by Peter Ferguson, hard held on the back of You Little Beauty, carving out closing sectionals of 56 and 27.4.
Leo Lincoln will be suited by the longer 2200 metres this week but in a R45 to R60 event, he finds five higher rated horses against him.
“He just needs a nice trip to get into the money.”
Remaining runner The Rascal, punted in to $1.85 on the fixed ddds market in the fourth race, only has to pace a little more cleanly to win.
Despite being fitted with spreaders last week he was still rough at various points round the course when 2.5 lengths second to Caloriefree.
“He gets on himself when he’s asked to sprint quickly, he needs a steady pace. But in a six-horse field he won’t be too far off them even if he sits last. He’ll win one soon.”

Our runners this week: How our trainers rate them

Nathan’s comments
Thursday night at Cambridge
Race 1: Lincoln Linda
5.55pm
“She needed the run last week. Even though she galloped in the score-up, her manners are definitely improving as she didn’t pull in the running. She’ll be sharper this week so hopefully she’ll pace away and get the job done. It looks a pretty even field.”
Race 4: Lincoln Lover
7.18pm
“He only battled away last start and Fergie said he wasn’t really on the bit at the back of the field. He’s been racing for a while and might be a bit fatigued. The outside draw doesn’t help either and Soul Artist was very impressive winning last time.”
Race 6: Lincoln Maree
8.22pm
“She hasn’t got a lot of speed but she tries hard so the best spot for her might be in front, rolling along. That said, her closing sectionals (57.8, 27.9) were the best in the race last time. We couldn’t get one of the Sharpe boys so we’ve had to settle for Frank Phelan. She’s an each-way chance with Andy (Sharpe) the one to beat on Commander Lincoln.”

Ray’s comments
Friday night at Auckland
Race 2: Leo Lincoln
5.21pm
“We’ve thrown him in the deep end, but it was either that or trial. He’s been going OK but he’ll need the run for sure.”
Race 2: Spiritual Bliss
5.21pm
“She won’t be completely out of it, she’s better than people think. The inside second row draw isn’t ideal, and luck will obviously play a part, but I think she’ll be competitive.”
Race 3: Rivergirl Bella
5.57pm
“She was always going to need the run last time as it was her first for a long time. She’ll improve off that. She’s plenty fast enough but needs to get fitter.”
Race 3: Sammy Lincoln
5.57pm
“We found he had a bit of a virus after he last raced so had to ease up on him. He’ll be a little short (on fitness) but his class should carry him through. He is vulnerable with his behaviour at the moment but he’s only got to get round without any silliness and I can’t see how they can beat him.”
Race 4: Johnny Lincoln
6.24pm
“He’s racing super and they’ll know he’s there. He’s trained on well since his Metro Final win. He races tough and at Auckland they have to be tough now.”
