Little Missy can lead at Cambridge on Friday and she’s much more reliable than Sammy

Co-trainer Ray Green is looking for another good effort from Missy Lincoln ($9.50, $2.70) at Cambridge on Friday night, a week out from her first test in Sires’ Stakes company.

The two-year-old filly takes on older horses again in the 10th race, trying for back-to-back wins after her impressive all-the-way win at Auckland last week.

And, from two on the gate, Green reckons she’s ideally placed to find the front again from where new driver Harrison Orange can dictate the terms.

“I think she’ll cross the inside horse easily and I can’t see why she won’t go well again. She’ll be a bit fitter this time.”

PHOTO: Megan Liefting/Race Images.The Bettor’s Delight filly, who is set for the $30,000 Sires’ Stakes heat for two-year-old fillies at Cambridge on August 21, had little trouble dispatching her rivals when resuming, albeit having to run only a 2:04.1 mile rate for the 2200 metres.

Green has no doubt she can run faster and knows she will probably try a lot harder than her stablemate Sammy Lincoln ($5.50, $1.85) even though he has oodles of speed when he chooses to show it.

“He’s proven untrustworthy and only he knows what he’s going to do on Friday night.

“I thought he should have won last week with the trip he got, the best he’s had. Andre (Poutama) said he was jogging but as soon as he showed him daylight, he just quit.”

Angled out from the one-one turning for home, Sammy Lincoln looked like he was going to rocket straight past his rivals but ended up only whacking away for fourth, 4.6 lengths from winner Amazing Captain.

Sammy Lincoln draws one on the second line this week, from where he risks being buried, a poser for new driver Matthew White.

Debutant needs luck

Another handicapped by the same draw, debutant Copy Ten Four ($8, $2.30) will need plenty of luck to feature in the fifth race, says Green.

A $5000 weanling buy in 2023 by Green’s wife Debbie, the Fear The Dragon three-year-old has been handled patiently, contesting five workouts and trials.

“He’s a big colt but he goes quite well. Maurice has nursed him around a bit but the other day he sent him to the front and he hung on well.”

Beating three rivals, Copy Ten Four scored by half a length over race rival Shesfancylike in a pedestrian 2:06.2 mile rate, home in 61.4 and 30.1.

The bad draws don’t stop there either with consistent five-year-old Leo Lincoln ($8.50, $2.60) posted on the outside of the gate in the ninth race.

Best of the rest at Auckland last week behind Rubira and Jeremiah, Leo Lincoln won’t enjoy a perfect trail on Friday night.

“It’s always tough from out there, you’re just praying for a bit of luck. But he’s racing well, he’s a trier.”

Stablemate Colonel Lincoln ($19, $4.40) gets his first good draw this campaign in the same race and, from two, Green is expecting marked improvement.

“I’d like to see what he can do before I make judgement but, while he’s no superstar, he’s tradesman-like.”

Sharpe Stride ($12, $2.90), owned by co-trainer Nathan Delany, is a relative unknown, but is worth watching in the second event.

We saw nothing of the Elite Stride three-year-old when he broke in the score-up when debuting in May’s Northern Trotting Derby, but Delany says he’s come back stronger and more solid.

“I’m happy with what he’s doing. Some days he’s good, some not so good but, if he steps, he should find the front pretty easily and trot along.”
