Maggie’s outgrown her pacifier and is ready to run a Homer on debut at Auckland on Friday

She’s a delicate little filly but Lincoln Farms’ senior trainer Ray Green is still expecting a bold showing from Rivergirl Maggie when she debuts at Auckland on Friday night.

The Bettor’s Wish two-year-old has only six rivals in the third race and is rated a strong $2.45 second favourite, unbeaten in a workout and trial this month.

In the latest hitout, on September 18, she showed speed to lead and easily held off two Barry Purdon-Scott Phelan runners, closing in 58.3 and 28.1.

“She wasn’t strong enough early to go on with but she’s strengthened up now.”

Rivergirl Maggie is raced by Philadelphia Racing’s Phil and Delia Cook and is the first foal from a daughter of their speedy 20-race winner Ideal Alice.

Her main rival, the Purdon-Phelan trained Cyclone Miki ($2.20), also has the pedigree to excel, being out of Cyclone Kate, who won 21 races, 14 in Australia. And she has the advantage of having had a race at Auckland, when second on debut behind Lincoln Farms’ promising pacer Omaha Lincoln.

Lincoln Farms’ only other runner on Friday night, Sammy Lincoln ($6.50, $1.95) takes on a good line-up in the fifth race, headed by the Nathan Purdon-trained Georgie Best ($2.70).

But Green isn’t fazed by the opposition: “He’s as good as anything in the field on ability and he’s in the zone at the moment. All he needs is a trip.”

Sammy Lincoln didn’t have the gate speed to hold up from five last week and ended up trying to make a run from the rear 600 metres out, forced three then four wide rounding the home turn.

“When they walk then rip home in 56.4 you can’t make ground,” Green said.

In running fifth, 3.3 lengths from Mr Miki, Sammy Lincoln was clocked over his last 800 metres in 55.9, the second fastest in the race and only one tenth of a second slower than B Envious who enjoyed a much easier passage in the running line.

“He’s better drawn in three this time and should go well.”
