Nate having a last spin round on his wee mate Eric - and he’s in with a very good chance

Trainer Nathan Delany will have a sentimental last spin round on Dreams Of Eric at Cambridge on Thursday night.

It’s the little three-year-old’s last start before flying to China after Delany and his fellow owner Cody Evans sold him last month.

“I had the first drive on him (in March) so I thought I might as well have the last,” said Delany. “And I’ll definitely be saluting if he wins.”

Dreams Of Eric has been driven in each of his last 13 starts by gun junior Harrison Orange but with more than 50 wins, 68 in all, he is not eligible to drive the horse this time.

To get into the race, Dreams Of Eric and Desert Dawn as R52 and R56 pacers, must be driven by a junior concession driver and Delany, with 43 wins qualifies.

“Unluckily he’s got to have me on, but I couldn’t be happier with him. He trained super this week and feels a lot brighter and sharper.”

With Orange driving rival Murtle The Turtle, Delany says he’ll be “giving him the eye-ball” so don’t be surprised to see him hunting for the early lead.

Last week, the horse trailed fourth early before moving into the parked position 800 metres from home, unable to stave off Blazing Louie sprinting off his back.

“There are no Blazing Louies this week and he’s pulled through that race well. I think he’ll be a very good chance.”

Dreams Of Eric, the winner of four races at Cambridge and just on $25,000, will go into the paddock after Thursday’s race and enter quarantine on December 16.

“He’ll need his share of luck. He’s at the mercy of others from his draw - you don’t know how the race will pan out - but maybe a bit of desperation might set in with the bigger stake and he can get out. He’s beaten most of these before, they’re all on a par.”
