Showy black improved but Flemington sprint on Saturday will be no Kruz for $101 outsider
Lincoln’s Kruz should be improved for his first-up run in Melbourne - but he’ll need to be as he faces a stronger field at Flemington on Saturday.
The showy black lines up in the A$175,000 Bob Hoysted Handicap, again over the straight 1000 metre course, facing not only the first three home from three weeks ago, but also some fresh talent.
Trainer Kathryn Durden says she’s not overly worried about the horse drawing 10 of 10, as in the straight dash it’s often hard to know whether it’s better to be drawn in or out.
“But if the horses on inside begin well it might be easier for him to get over and get cover.”
Lincoln’s Kruz had no cover in his last start in the A$150,000 CARM Trophy, when he raced up on the speed, second at the 800 and third at the 400. And even though he finished 5.5 lengths from the winner Kallos, Durden rated the run “OK”.
“He got knocked a couple of times and taken off his line. Possibly if he had got a bit of cover he might have sprinted up better.
“He had a bit of a blow after the run so can improve a bit with that run under his belt and his experience up the straight.
“He’s done really well since and I’m happy with his work. It’s a stronger field on Saturday though.”
In early fixed odds, Lincoln’s Kruz is the clear $101 outsider behind The Bopper ($3.20), On The Lead ($4.80) and Kallos ($5.50).
Dean Holland takes the reins.
Lincoln’s Kruz races at 4.20pm NZ time at Flemington on Saturday.

Race 4: Platinum Attack
2.53pm
“He had 10 days out in the paddock after the BCD Sprint and has freshened up nicely. He is certainly well in himself. We have finally secured a decent draw of four on Saturday so hopefully Ben Thompson can get into the one-one from it. There looks to be good speed in the race with Alabama Lass, who will likely lead, so landing not too far off her will be essential to give ourselves a winning chance. I didn’t think this was the strongest of sprint fields compared to what he has been racing against and being competitive in so, providing he gets the right run, there’s no reason he cannot be right in it.”
